2009 chevrolet hhr review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Utility and efficiency with style. introductionthe chevrolet hhr is a car-based retro-wagon that celebrates its chevy heritage with styling inspired by the iconic 1949 suburban. Hhr stands for heritage high roof, a reference to the early high-roofed suburbans and panel wagons that inspired its design.  based on the same platform as the chevrolet cobalt, the hhr was first launched as a 2006 model. The hhr is similar in concept to the chrysler pt cruiser.  we found the chevy hhr fun to drive. It isn't a sports car, but it's nimble and we were pleased with its acceleration. The hhr feels more responsive than its horsepower, torque, and transmission ratio numbers suggest. Plus, it gets decent fuel economy.  the hhr panel van features smooth, windowless side panels and side cargo doors with no handles. The cargo doors open via an instrument panel button. While it's plainer inside and provides seating for only two, the panel best exemplifies the early suburban heritage.  the hhr ss is the most fun to drive of the hhr models, launching quickly off the line and offering sharp handling. On an autocross circuit, we found the ss model handled like a sports car.  the hhr interior isn't as functional as we'd like, however, and the base cloth fabric left us wishing we'd ordered the optional leather.  the 2009 hhr is unchanged in any major way over the previous model, but there are numerous detail changes and upgrades. Standard on all 2009 hhr models are xm satellite radio, anti-lock brakes, stabilitrak vehicle stability control system with traction control, and roof-rail side-curtain airbags. The 2. 2-liter engine delivers more power and better fuel economy for 2009, and there is e85 flexfuel capability on the 2. 2-liter and 2. 4-liter engines. Options for the ls include remote start, the automatic transmission 1,000), running boards, a spoiler, and a variety of other factory and dealer-installed features and accessories.  the hhr lt 20,720) adds remote start as standard, an eight-way power driver's seat, driver's lumbar support, and the availability of many more optional extras, including a bright chrome appearance package, which includes 16-inch chrome alloy wheels, and the sun and fun edition, which includes sunroof and the 16-inch wheels.  the hhr 2lt adds the lt equipment group 1,700), which includes the 2. 4-liter engine, 17-inch chrome alloy wheels, fog lamps, running boards, fe3 sport suspension, bluetooth connectivity, leather-wrapped steering wheel, auto-dimming mirror, and a pioneer audio system with seven speakers and 260 watts.  the hhr ss 24,815) adds the turbocharged engine, performance handling suspension, 18-inch polished alloy wheels, ss embroidered seats, a rear spoiler, and other items. Optional on the ss is the performance package 895).  the hhr panel comes in ls 19,030), lt 21,030), and ss 25,135) versions. Options and prices for the panel are the same as for the equivalent levels of the non-panel versions.  safety features include front airbags, front and rear side-curtain airbags, anti-lock brakes, stabilitrak electronic stability control with traction control, and tire-pressure monitoring. walkaroundwe like the retrospective styling of the chevy hhr. The closest comparison is the chrysler pt cruiser, another retro-styled utility vehicle with good fuel efficiency.  the rounded nose of the hhr is not unlike chevy's ssr, which also reflects the brand's truck heritage. The hhr's fenders are well defined, with flat side wheel-well openings contrasting favorably with the vehicle's many curved, contemporary sculpted surfaces. Front and rear bumpers and fog lamps are integrated into seamless fascia, with nostalgic integrated running boards. The flush glass all around, including the windshield, is a nice touch, as are the headlights surrounded by body panels in old school fashion. The taillamp treatment consists of two round vertically stacked lenses on each side. The large, prominent grille is chrome, (except on the ss model), and appears much like that of the 1949 suburban.  front and rear bumpers are molded from composite material, integrated as part of their respective fascia. It provides lots of room and functionality without being boxy. When viewed from a distance, the hhr looks larger than it really is. Examined closely, it's compact. The cargo doors open wide, enabling cargo access from both sides of the vehicle, as well as from the rear liftgate. The cargo doors are smooth and don't have external handles; they are opened via a dashboard release button or the remote keyless entry fob. The large, continuous area created by the windowless cargo doors and rear panels is ideal for business logos, advertising or personalization. Side visibility is obviously limited due to the solid sides without windows; one must rely primarily on mirrors for backing maneuvers. The smooth, windowless sides on the panel give it a cleaner, retro, more hot rod look than the standard models. The lack of windows adds security for contents inside.  the hhr ss sits lower than its stable mates, but sports extended front and rear fascias that give it the appearance of riding much lower. The front fascia features an air-dam design with integrated fog lights, and the grille comes with mesh-style upper and lower grille inserts. The new rear fascia provides a cutout for a single bright exhaust tip. Rocker moldings somewhat resemble accentuated running boards. Out back, a rear spoiler is mounted above the rear glass. Body-color door handles, mirror caps and the rear license plate surround, along with ss badging on the front doors and liftgate, further differentiate the ss from the others. interiorinside, the chevy hhr provides, for the most part, comfortable and functional surroundings. Included are durable, easy-to-clean cargo surfaces, a front passenger seat that folds flat for more cargo space, a 60/40 split/fold-flat second-row seat, and a multi-position cargo package tray in the rear that provides cargo security. Speaking of headroom, there isn't a lot of it, in spite of the high roof. There's a handy flip-up compartment on top of the dash and a small glovebox. The rear provides one cupholder and small door pockets. The rear seat, split 60/40, folds flat very easily, as does the front passenger seat, and, since the 60-percent side of the rear seat is on the left, a long item like a ladder can be slipped in diagonally, a nice feature. The rear cargo floor flips up to reveal a five-inch-deep tray useful for storage. The rear liftgate is one piece and raises easily.  the hhr panel provides seating for two and a large, flat cargo floor with tie-down points to help hold things in place. The hhr panel cargo area features a standard auxiliary power outlet, as well as a 40-amp auxiliary power connector to provide service for a variety of specialty equipment needs. Two large storage compartments, with a lockable option, are located forward under the cargo floor (in place of the rear seats of the passenger models). The compartments offer security for things such as computer equipment, flashlights, service manuals and other valuables.  the hhr ss features a special interior with ss-embroidered sport seats with inserts, a specific gauge cluster, an a-pillar-mounted turbo boost gauge and a new shifter arrangement.

2006 hyundai sonata review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new mid-size sedan is a compelling buy. introductionthe mid-size, mid-price car market is approaching saturation. Depending on how they're counted, more than seven nameplates compete for shoppers looking for a car that's thrifty, yet performs; that's comfortable, but not expensive; that's fresh and new, but promises to be reliable.  korea's car makers have never been a part of this class. They've danced around the edges, with the kia optima and hyundai sonata. But neither car has broken through and established a solid foothold in the mainstream u. Market.  enter the all-new 2006 hyundai sonata.  while the previous-generation sonata made a dramatic jump to the top spot in the j. Power and associates 2004 initial quality study ranking of entry midsize cars, the 2006 sonata has been completely redesigned. It's bigger, better equipped, more technologically advanced and sharper looking than the 2005 model it replaces.  the class in which the new sonata competes, however, is blurred. Exterior-wise, it goes against mid-size sedans, primarily the honda accord, toyota camry and nissan altima and secondarily against the chevrolet malibu, the kia optima and the upcoming ford fusion. Inside, though, the '06 sonata moves up a class, to large car, which gives it a potential edge in creature comfort.  with minor and essentially immaterial exceptions, it lives up to that potential. It's roomier in almost every dimension than its midsize competitors, which is no surprise. Fit and finish is on a par with most others in the class, which also is no surprise. In terms of performance, it equals or bests comparably featured cars, which is a surprise. It's cleaner, too, than earlier sonatas. Just as important, if not more so, the new sonata is aggressively priced, positioned smack in the middle of the range of prices of the mid-size sedans.  all this combined makes the 2006 hyundai sonata good enough to put the mid-priced, midsize market on notice. Two engines and three transmissions are available. The uplevel engine is a 235-horsepower v6. Standard equipment includes air conditioning; cruise control; power outside mirrors, windows and central locking with keyless remote; am/fm/cd/mp3 stereo; and leather-wrapped, tilt steering wheel. The list of standard items starts with those on the gl and expands to include fog lamps; premium-grade cloth upholstery and cut-pile carpeting; choice of wood-grain or metal-grain interior trim accents; steering wheel-mounted, redundant audio controls; adjustable lumbar in driver's seat; five-function trip computer; carpeted floor mats; and 16-inch alloy wheels in place of the gl's hub-capped steel wheels. The gls order sheet has two option boxes. One is for a power, tilt-and-slide glass sunroof 850). The other is for a premium package 1350) containing the aforementioned sunroof plus auto-dimming inside rearview mirror with compass (both with a much-appreciated on/off switch), homelink programmable garage and security remote and eight-way power driver's seat.  next up the gls v6 20,895), which comes standard with a five-speed automatic. This brings with it solar control window glass, chrome exterior window trim and chrome-tipped dual exhausts. The sunroof is an option 850). The optional premium sport package 1500) includes the sunroof, 17-inch wheels with michelin pilot tires, the electrochromic rearview mirror with compass, homelink and power driver's seat.  on the top rung is the lx 22,895), which comes with everything on the gls plus leather-trimmed seats and simulated leather interior door panel inserts. Distinguished by chrome exterior door handles, the lx also gets automatic air conditioning with hyundai's air quality system, which shifts to recirculating when it detects offensive or polluted outside air; a sliding cover on the front center console; the auto-dimming inside rearview mirror with compass; the homelink system; the eight-way power driver's seat; and a tilt and telescoping steering wheel. The sunroof can be obtained separately 850) or as part of an lx-exclusive premium package 1400) that also has a am/fm/cd6 changer/mp3 stereo with subwoofer.  safety features in addition to the mandatory dual-stage front-seat airbags include front-seat side-impact airbags for torso protection and full-coverage side curtain airbags, designed to provide head protection, all standard on all models. Active-safety features include antilock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and electronic stability control with traction control, all standard. These crash-avoidance features are optional or not available on many of the other vehicles in this class. walkarounddesign tastes are extremely volatile in the automotive world. A styling cue like an arched-eyebrow headlight treatment can go from eye-catching to invisible in a couple years. Or it can survive for decades and come to be accepted as a brand trademark, such as bmw's twin-kidney grille. The hyundai sonata hasn't yet found its signature trademark cues, but the 2006's designers are looking in the right places.  the new sonata's fascia is refreshingly clean and spare, with sharply angled headlight housings and a quiet, clean-cut grille topped with a sliver of chrome. Wide and deep openings beneath the front bumper provide a home for tightly focused foglamps and visually pull the front end closer to the ground while directing cooling air into the radiator. The striking, concave hood reduces the car's perceived mass without cramping the engine compartment.  the side treatment avoids the all-too-common wedge look with an almost horizontal beltline riding above softly shouldered fenders and door panels. Mirrored 'z' seams where the end corners of the bumpers meet the quarter panels add interest, while blacked-out window surrounds play down the tallish side glass. The flat-flanged rims on the up-level 17-inch wheels suggest a high-end european import more than an affordable asian nameplate.  the taillight outlines repeat the headlight shapes and bookend a broad, trapezoidal license plate inset. Again, there's a hint of other cars' architecture, most notably contemporary camrys and accords. Sporty, california hotrod-idiom dual exhausts mark the v6-equipped models. interiorthe 2006 hyundai sonata's interior marks a major step up the quality ladder. Some rough edges on a few plastic molds and a less-than-lustrous finish on some dash panels are the only shortcomings we noticed. The overall look, though, is clearly competitive with most in the class and better than some.  a polished, hard-surfaced applique capped with a thin slice of chrome divides the upper and lower halves of the dash. The upper is a glare-absorbing dark color, the lower a space-enhancing light tone. The passenger airbag enclosure is seamless, mimicking the trend in higher-end midsize sedans.  as with many modern cars, the stereo head is fully integrated into the dash, making difficult any aftermarket customizing of the sound system but adding an upscale touch. Air conditioner controls are mounted beneath the stereo, within the accent trim centered in the lower portion of the center stack. Stereo and air conditioner controls are substantial, finger-friendly, intuitive knobs and buttons, with status and selections clearly displayed in their respective lcd screens.  three round dials in the hooded instrument cluster communicate the bare necessities of operational data to the driver, with the largest the speedometer nestled inside a polished circle. To its left is the tachometer, to its right conjoined water temperature and fuel gauges. In the lower dash to the left of the steering column are a bank of five switch plugs, only two of which are employed in the u. Version, one as an on/off for the esc, the other the dash-light rheostat, and a flip-down storage bin. The ignition key slides into a slot placed where it should be, in the dash to the right of the steering column instead of on the steering column itself.  all models get a leather-wrapped steering wheel. On the gls and lx, the steering wheel serves multiple duties. Besides the obvious, redundant controls for the audio (arrayed somewhat oddly, with the mode selector on top and the volume controlled by the lower two, versus the more common approach of sandwiching the mode button between the volume controls) are appended to the lower left-side of the hub. On the other side of the hub are the cruise controls, with a helpful cancel function.  outward visibility is good, although the wide c-pillars constrict quick, over-the-shoulder traffic checks for lane changing. Rear side windows roll all the way down, thanks to small, fixed, rear quarter windows that move the windows' rear tracks forward in the door. The cloth upholstery on the gl looks and feels durable; on the gls, it's a bit fancier in texture and stitchi. 1998 dodge neon review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Refined, but still fun to drive. introductionthe dodge neon has always been inexpensive and fun to drive. But this year's models are much more pleasant to live with on a daily basis. Nearly one-third of the neon's components have been changed since its 1994 introduction. This year's models are quieter and ride nicer than earlier neons. Interior details are much closer to the honda benchmark.  chrysler's continuing improvements to the neon are the result of learning a hard lesson. People who came to the clinics said they were tired of the rising prices of cars. This seemed to make sense and chrysler listened.  it was a big mistake.  in an effort to hold down costs, the neon debuted with few frills. It came with a cheap interior and relatively little engineering and manufacturing effort went into minimizing noise and vibration.  the neon quickly gained favor among car enthusiasts and others who enjoyed an inexpensive car that was a blast to drive. But a large group of shoppers complained that the car lacked the features of its competition. It's noisy, they said, and it seems to lack refinement. They've been engineering small solutions to address minor deficiencies. As a result, the 1998 neons are much more refined than the early cars. Noise, vibration and harshness are substantially improved. More convenience features make the neon attractive to people who want a lot more out of life than a fast economy car. Chrysler's efforts should satisfy the masses.  but what about that small group of enthusiasts who applauded the neon's acceleration performance and appreciated its entertainment value? Will they be left out in the cold?  the answer comes in the form of the new dodge neon r/t, an enthusiast's model that focuses more on performance than frills. For less than $15,000, the r/t comes with viper stripes and most of the hot rod hardware found on the acr competition model that helped the neon win three consecutive national championships in scca showroom stock racing. walkaroundneons are instantly distinguished by their buggy-looking ovoid headlights and rounded nose. But this one is anything but a wallflower.  broad viper stripes on flame red, intense blue or bright white paint set the dodge neon r/t apart from standard neons. Like its acr (american club racer) competition model, the neon r/t comes with a sports suspension, quick-ratio steering, and a close-ratio gearbox. Specially tuned springs, front and rear antiroll bars and new rear spring isolaters comprise the sports suspension.  dodge and plymouth neons are essentially identical. Only the badge and a few options packages, such as the r/t package, differentiates them.  neons are available in three flavors: base, highline and sport. Two engines are available: a 132-horsepower 2. 0-liter single overhead cam (sohc) engine and a 150-horsepower double overhead cam (dohc) engine. They come with a choice of 5-speed manual gearbox or 3-speed automatic transmission.  other than the number of doors, there are few differences between coupe and sedan. Interior room is about the same. Even the weight difference is negligible. All neons ride on a wide track and a long (104-inch) wheelbase with minimal front and rear overhang.  base models come with rear drum brakes, while performance variations use rear discs. The front suspension is macpherson struts with assymmetrical lower control arms, while the rear is chapman struts with dual lower transverse arms. interiorneon's long wheelbase helps create a roomy interior. Both the sedan and the coupe are among the roomiest cars in this class. Ironically, the coupe is a bit roomier in back, with more rear shoulder and hip room. Large doors make getting in and out easy. Sedans come with wider rear doors than those on most compacts for easier entry.  the dashboard is simple, functional and sporty with controls that are large and easy to reach. Instruments are big and highly legible. Tachometers are optional.  neon r/t carries the performance theme inside with unique bucket seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. driving impressionwe're impressed with the new neons after driving them through pennsylvania's pocono mountains, turning some hot laps around pocono international raceway and heading in and out of newark airport.  a low curb weight and plenty of power add up to spirited acceleration, even when equipped with the single-cam engine and 3-speed automatic. A 4-speed automatic would likely increase operating efficiency and performance, however.  the best performance comes from the twin-cam engine and 5-speed manual. The advantage the dohc engine has over the sohc engine comes into play in the upper rev range. While the twin-cam engine produces 150 horsepower compared with the sohc's 132, but it comes at higher revs. Therefore, we vote for the 150-horsepower dohc engine.  r/t models come with firmer suspension settings than the other models, but we found the ride quality in the r/t quite acceptable. We like the way it more precisely controls the tires. Jabbing or lifting suddenly off the throttle did not unduly upset its balance in the corners, but it could be easily rotated in turns as needed.  most people, however, will prefer the softer standard suspension for its ability to better filter out potholes and vibration on imperfect road surfaces. It's a much better car now than it was when it was introduced. Even with all the improvements, the neon does not match some of the other cars in this class when it comes to ride quality and refinement. When ordered with the r/t package, it's a real sports car.
